Colorado Culture, History & Economy

The land in what today is Colorado has been inhabited for thousands of years by civilizations such as the Anasazi. When Europeans arrived seeking gold in the 1500s, the area was populated by Native American tribes, such as the Comanche, Apache, Cheyenne, and Arapaho.

In 1682, French explorer Robert de La Salle entered eastern Colorado and claimed the land for France, making it part of France’s Louisiana territory. It was purchased in 1803 by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

When the Mexican-American war ended in 1848, the United States gained control of western Colorado. In 1858, gold was discovered near Pikes Peak, attracting thousands of miners. As Colorado grew, the Colorado Territory was created in 1861. On November 7, 1876, Colorado was admitted to the Union as the 38th state.

Today, Colorado’s diverse economy is dominated by oil and gas extraction, aerospace, technology industries, bioscience, transportation equipment, agriculture (cattle, wheat, marijuana, dairy products, corn, and hay), and tourism.
