Montana History, Culture & Economy
By the time the Europeans arrived in the 1700s, Native American tribes, such as the Blackfeet, Shoshone, Crow, Cheyenne, Kootenai and Salish lived in the area. In the 1700s, French fur traders arrived and began trading with the Native Americans for beaver furs. The United States bought the majority of Montana from the French in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Large deposits of gold were discovered in 1858, causing boom towns such as Helena and Virginia City to spring up. Montana was eventually admitted as the 41st U.S. state on November 8, 1889. Known for wide-open spaces, grassy plains, and towering mountains, Montana is the 4th largest state in the nation but has only the 43rd largest population.
Today, Montana’s economy is supported by a number of industries, including agriculture (including both crops and livestock), timber, mining, and travel and tourism. The state is home to many parks, forests and scenic areas, including Glacier National Park, Helena National Forest, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and Big Hole National Battlefield. The Crow Fair and Rodeo has occurred every year since 1909 and is the largest Northern Native American gathering.
There are more than a dozen public and private colleges and universities in Montana, including the University of Montana, Montana State University, Rocky Mountain College, and several tribal colleges.
