Nebraska History, Culture & Economy

The land that today is Nebraska has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native American tribes such as the Cheyenne, Lakota Sioux, Omaha, Pawnee, and the Otoe people. The name “Nebraska” comes from the Otoe Indian word “nebrathka,” meaning “flat water.”

Europeans arrived in 1541, and Spain laid claim to the land. In 1682, a French explorer claimed the land for France. For the next 100 years, the land would be claimed and fought over by the Spanish, French, and British.

The U.S. bought most of Nebraska from France in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase and established Fort Atkinson in 1819, the first army post built west of the Mississippi River.

Farmers and cattle ranchers started to move into the Nebraska Territory by the 1860s when the Homestead Acts allowed people to acquire free land in the area. Nebraska was admitted to the Union on March 1, 1867 as the 37th state.

Known as the Cornhusker State, the state is best known as one of the largest exporters of agricultural products in the world (including beef, pork, corn, soybeans, and wheat). Other important industries include freight transport, manufacturing, telecommunications, information technology, and insurance.

Nebraska is home to Offutt Air Force Base, the headquarters of the U.S. Strategic Command, the 557th Weather Wing, and the 55th Wing of the Air Combat Command.

It’s also home to nearly 300 public school districts and several renowned private colleges and universities, including the University of Nebraska, Omaha, one of the top medical schools in the world.
